Safer Neighbourhoods Young Advisor

Interviews took place this week for the responsible role of Young Advisor on the Safer Neighbourhood Panel for Orpington Ward.

The interview panel were very impressed with the level of student application and the manner in which the two successful students Beth Saunders and Sadie Orsler prepared for and presented themselves at the interview, achieving a standard that far exceeded the expectations the Metropolitan Police had for interviewing people of such a young age.

They both showed excellent communication skills, reliability, local awareness and a keen interest in improving the image of young people within the community.

Beth and Sadie have committed to representing the local youth by offering a youth prospective on local crime and issues, plus ideas and initiatives on how to make the community a safer place to live.

Many Congratulations go to these two successful candidates

Well done- Beth and Sadie,

we look forward to working with you.

Priory & St.Olave’s Family Clusters

Integrated Swimming Gala-

Priory students were on hand to support this year’s Gala as competitors with Sport Leaders helping behind the scenes. Eltham College played host once again to the annual coming together of mainstream and special schools in a swimming extravaganza that truly celebrated enjoyment and inclusion within sport. Twelve teams in total competed in a programme of non-scoring races that included relays and obstacle challenges and all in the rapturous company of The Mayor of the London Borough of Bromley, Councillor Douglas Auld; as well as over a hundred cheering supporters.

Priory Leadership-

Yr 9 Sport Leaders have been on hand to take Yr 5 & 6 primary students through their paces in a number of Tag Rugby Festivals located at various Orpington schools. The framework of delivery included a carousel of activities that promoted improved teamwork; passing & running with the ball combined with a practical appreciation of the rules of the game. On each occasion, positive feedback was expressed by both staff and students as to how much all prospered from the experience.

Yr 9 Sport Leaders have also been on hand to support Year 5 students with a set of multi-skill challenges under the umbrella of the Team Elite initiative. Although some school visits have had to be postponed due to inclement weather, others have yielded commendable results from students rotated around eight tasks that have tested their agility; balance and co-ordination in various ways.

Priory Leadership Academy-

The Priory has successfully established a Leadership Academy formed of Yr 10-12

Young Ambassadors assigned to promote a range of sporting opportunities at both Primary & Secondary levels. Supporting Yr 7 & 8 students not usually engaged in sport, the YAs have worked upon a framework of delivery in the field of intra-competition with extra-curricular coaching sessions due to commence after Easter. Promoting both Olympic & Paralympic values has been instrumental within their roles & responsibilities that will result in the leading of Primary school assemblies in what promises to be a uniquely exciting Summer term ahead.

Those Priory students on the Leadership Academy are:

Amy Colby,

Amy Stapleton,

Jake Carlisle,

Jenna Smith,

Bethany Saunders,

Grace Miles,

Cameron Bradley,

Carol Singing and Cake Sale

Last December, Kirsty Wilson and her two year 10 friends, Emily Howell and Connie Janes, went out in miserable weather and collected £150 on their Carol Singing/cake sale round their community.

Further money was raised and a total sum of £400 was sent to the The Alzheimer's Charity to help support them in their care in the community.

Well done Girls!!

Sports Relief Day

On Friday 19th March the whole school took part in a run/walk for sports Relief and although we haven’t got a final total ,over a £1000 has been raised.

Many students were sponsored for the event and helped raise a lot of money.

A particular mention should go to two students Emily Langdon, who raised £110 and Eleanor Harvey, who raised £114.

Thanks to all those who took part, a fantastic effort by everyone!!

Pictures to follow!!

Sponsored walk to the Kenyan Embassy

Waking up at 6am and walking 20 miles isn’t exactly everyone’s idea of fun, which is why you’ll be surprised to here that that’s exactly what a team of our 6th form students decided to do.

On Saturday March 13, a group of dedicated, and questionably able-bodied young people set out on a sponsored walk. The aim of their walk was raise money, enabling each of them to visit Kenya in July, and voluntarily assist teaching in a primary school there which the sixth form have maintained a link project with over the past 18 months. The link between Kipriria Academy and our own The Priory School has been extremely successful and fulfilling. Our link team have sent them utilities such as books, computers and sports equipment over the course of the project, and have also spurred kids from each school to write to each other and learn about each other’s lives and cultures in Geography lessons.

The sponsored walk took our students from outside the gates of The Priory School to the doorstep of the Kenyan Embassy in London. Taxing as it may seem, the day was enjoyed by all, despite getting lost several times along the way. Arriving at the Embassy at about 3pm, exhausted and… well exhausted (except for Mr. Probin who felt it necessary to walk the sponsored walk whilst in his car and driving!); a snap-shot was taken of our team with a look of false-energeticness.

Not only was the link project using the walk as a fundraiser, but the publicity prospects could not be ignored.

Netball

Please can all netball girls be congratulated on this seasons results and training. Despite numerous rearranged matches, and altered practice time… as well as my year 9 students going home on a half day and then coming back in again to play a match (on 2 occasions) we have managed to play the majority of the year 7, 8 and 9 fixtures.

I have also enjoyed the senior teams highs and lows (poor Abi's ankle)… with some massive wins against Coopers and Hayes and a dramatic experience against St Olaves. Many thanks to Amy and Molly in the 6th form for all their help with the Year 7 team, as well as Miss Baird.

11th March 2010 The Priory School & The Frank Bruno Boxing Academy hosts “Round 5”

After the amazing success of previous shows 1-4, the pressure was on to make Round 5 even more thrilling.

The enthusiastic crowd watched a succession of 9 exciting bouts where the young boxers from FBBA demonstrated the skills and discipline they have learnt andprogression they have made since the last show against opponents from all over South East London.

Most improved boxer on the night Ayomi Harding took on Joe Marlin in a re-match that proved to be his most determined fight yet. After tiring slightly in the second round, he showed real grit and determination to come back in the 3rd round and go on to win his bout.

Best boxer of the night was Ben Webster; with an impressive display of fitness and skill he sealed a unanimous decision against a gutsy opponent from Bromley & Downham ABC.

The FBBA is now a recognised affiliated hubsite for the ABAE and working in partnership with the ABAE & ECABA to create a “High Performance Centre” for September 2010 which will include an “Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence” in line with existing educational programmes within the Academy.

Year 10 Citizenship news

In recent history Britain has shown itself to be a world leader in charitable gestures and giving. “Comic Relief”, “Sport Relief”, “Children in Need” and the generosity shown by our national community during world disaster appeals illustrate vividly this point.

At the Priory we continue to develop a sense of community and cooperation upon which charitable giving and compassion thrive.

Year 10 students taking Citizenship at the Priory are all involved in the YPI project. The competition is gaining momentum amongst year 10 students and the competitive juices are certainly flowing.

The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness among young people of philanthropy's role in supporting civil society. Launched in Canada by the Toskan Casale Foundation, and directed in the UK by the Institute for Philanthropy, this programme has reached so far over 10,000 pupils internationally and granted £180,000 to local charities in the UK alone.

Working in small teams, pupils identify and research grassroots organizations which are tackling the issues that they care most about; with the guidance of a dedicated citizenship teacher, who is supported by YPI staff, pupils visit their chosen local charity and prepare presentations on why that charity is most worthy of support. The group judged to have made the best presentation in each school is granted £3,000 to award to their charity.

YPI is of tremendous benefit to charities, schools and pupils alike, channelling money to local charities and raising the skills and awareness of pupils in order to contribute to the development of a greater culture of cooperation and community..

A grand final is due in June during which the teams shall present their charitable causes to parents, staff and a panel of judges who will have the final say as to which charity wins the £3000. The evening is set to be entertaining, enjoyable and most importantly worthwhile.

Students and all the Citizenship staff look forward to seeing you all there!

Drama News

From 12th-14th March, 10 year 11 students went on a drama weekend to Shaftesbury.
The aim was for the students to create brand new drama work, write, rehearse and perform during the weekend.
We had an excellent time, the venue was idyllic and, after a quick stop at Stonehenge, the hard work began!
All students created exciting original work to compliment their previous and future performances.
We also managed marshmallows around the campfire and a piano sing along!

Film Premiere

Rhys Williams has made a film using Priory School students about bullying. It is called Traveller and involves students in years 7 and 11. On 9th March the Drama faculty held a red carpet premiere in the canteen for staff, students, friends (and parents of those involved). Rhys, the award-winning director, made an introductory speech and thanked our students for their patience, hard-work and talent! Drinks and popcorn were served.

A really enjoyable evening was had by all who attended.

The film will be available for other Bromley schools to use to promote awareness of bullying and aid the campaign against it.
